Late Paleozoic and Early Mesozoic Tectonostratigraphy and Biostratigraphy of Western Pangea

SEPM Special Publication 113

Charles M. Henderson, Walter S. Snyder, and Scott M. Ritter

Publication date: 2022

Tectonic instability of the late Paleozoic margin of western Pangea from the Canadian Arctic to West Texas is the focus of this SEPM special publication. This exceptional collection of papers will spur future research on the tectonostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of the western Pangea margin.

The classic angular unconformity at Carlin Canyon, Nevada, as depicted on the cover, exemplifies the tectonic instability during the late Pennsylvanian. It occurs between the well-documented Antler and Sonoma orogenies and shows the complex geological history of this interval. Critical to understanding this complexity is the relative timing of events and therefore some papers highlight the stratigraphic correlation of different successions using conodont and fusulinid biostratigraphy.

Remarkably, the numerous regional unconformities are roughly synchronous across the entire margin. This volume represents a cross-section of the work presented at the GSA annual meeting in 2017 and other invited papers. The topics covered in these fifteen papers will be of interest not only to those conducting geologic research on the western margin of North America, but also to others considering broader questions related to the role of plate tectonics, climate, and eustacy on the accumulation of sedimentary successions.
