Salt, Sediment and Hydrocarbons
Christopher J. Travis, Holly Harrison, Michael R. Hudec, Bruno C. Vendeville, Frank J. Peel, and Bob F. Perkins
The last GCSSEPM Research Conference on Salt Tectonics was held in 1989, at a time when new concepts of salt tectonics were just beginning to be developed and the idea of widespread subsalt exploration in the US Gulf of Mexico remained the dream of a few maverick individuals. Since that time, several subsalt discoveries have been announced in the Gulf of Mexico, generating a flurry of leasing activity. Together with dramatic improvements in subsalt/salt flank seismic imaging and advances in understanding of salt movement, these discoveries have stimulated new, widespread interest in salt tectonics and its impact on sedimentation and petroleum distribution.
